- The value and advantages of using markers
are: Improvements in the genetic structure of the production and breeding
sectors, improvement in the estimation of genetic value, improving the accuracy of genetic
evaluation, the ability to genotype juveniles long before measurement of the phenotype,
the ability to associate traits which are not currently part of the selection criterion,
the ability to evaluate traits that are already part of the selection criterion, pedigree
verification, and confirmation of relatedness (molecular tracking as opposed to physical
tagging). Marker assisted selection programs significantly reduces the time required
within any breeding program to detect and incorporate quantitative trait loci for economic
benefit, whether this gain occurs at the hatchery or farm level.
